Dr Gareth Somers, Co-Founder of The Actor's Foundation, Teacher of Acting
Gareth has taught acting at 6 UK Universities and 3 UK drama schools. He studied Drama at the University of Manchester and went on to study acting and directing in the UK , in Denmark at the Odin Teatret, the US at the Meisner Centre and in the Czech Republic. He has taught in The Netherlands, Italy, Poland and The Czech Republic and at the Czech Theatre School JAMU. Gareth has directed over 40 professional performances, he has taught and directed performers of all types, from performers with the Belgrade National Ballet to Perrier award-winning comedians and members of the RSC. Reviewers have described his acting roles as ‘splendid’ and ‘beautifully menacing’, "measured: raw, yet contained" (The stage) .
He directed in the Czech Republic for three years and ran Naked Theatre at the Tobacco Factory in Bristol. This international company of performers had trained in the UK, Argentina, Moscow, Belgrade and Prague. The company explored ways of developing different forms of presence in the actor.
This unique work forms a unique foundation to the training of this school and is accompanied by more widely taught Physical Theatre, Russian, American, and Classical techniques.
